As most of my blog readers know, I have been following technology trends in persistent memory technologies for decades. I find many collaborators in this across the industry, especially in open industry bodies. In my work with the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), I have found them as a significant resource for the development and use of persistent memory.

Computational storage specifications from SNIA are approaching a full release. Computational storage promises to transform computing architectures by off-loading computing tasks to accelerators located close to storage to improve performance and reduce power consumption.
The Storage Networking Industry Association has nominated Hitachi Vantara’s Senior Executive, Vijeth Shivappa as member to its Technical Council , which is an elite panel of engineering wizards of IT industry. This announcement came in SNIA’s website early this month at a juncture, when SNIA India is planning for it’s most prestigious “SDC India 2021” as a virtual conference in August 2021.

The Open Fabric Alliance (OFA) and the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) signed an agreement to advance standards-based management of high performance data center infrastructures in April 2021. As part of the joint effort, a new open source fabric management framework being developed by the OFA – the OpenFabrics Management Framework (OFMF) – will utilize DMTF Redfish and SNIA Swordfish specifications for comprehensive management of servers, storage and fabrics including NVMe and NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) technology environments.
This year the organizing committee decided to add various talks around computational storage to the prior PM focus. The SNIA Persistent Memory and Computational Storage Summit demonstrated the increasing importance of persistent memory and computational storage in data center and other applications.
As part of the joint effort, a new open source fabric management framework being developed by the OFA – the OpenFabrics Management Framework (OFMF) – will utilize DMTF Redfish® and SNIA Swordfish™ specifications for comprehensive management of servers, storage and fabrics including NVMe and NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) technology environments.

This document specifies the requirements and guidance for use of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol in conjunction with storage technologies. The requirements are intended to facilitate secure interoperability of storage clients and servers as well as non-storage technologies that may have similar interoperability needs. This document was developed with the expectation that future versions of SMI-S and CDMI could leverage these requirements to ensure consistency between these standards as well as to more rapidly adjust the security functionality in these standards.
In a move that advances a common goal of increasing education for a unified framework and standardization for data and storage management, the SODA Foundation and Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) have entered into a marketing alliance.
The goal of this alliance is to educate the two organization’s respective communities on the importance of open source storage management standards and lay the groundwork for future collaborative technological developments, particularly leveraging SNIA’s work developing the SNIA Swordfish™ specification.
