MarFS, Marchive, and GUFI - Long Term Storage Strategies at LANL

This talk will provide an overview of scalable data management solutions in development and production at Los Alamos National Lab. The talk will target three primary efforts: MarFS, Marchive, and GUFI. MarFS is a near-POSIX scalable namespace over flexible data stores with a focus on data resiliency, metadata scalability, and IO shaping for efficient disk utilization. Marchive (MarFS archive) is a natural extension of the MarFS architecture for archival systems.

Low-Overhead Flash Disaggregation via NVMe-over-Fabrics

In this presentation we revisit NVMe-SSD disaggregation, using NVMe-over-Fabrics (NVMe-oF) as the remote storage protocol. We show that NVMe-oF reduces the overheads of remote access to a bare minimum, thus greatly increasing the efficiency and viability of NVMe disaggregation. Specifically, while recent works showed that SSD storage disaggregation via iSCSI degrades application-level throughput by 20%, we show negligible performance degradation with NVMe-oF.

Linux SMB3 and pNFS - Shaping the Future of Network File Systems

Network File Systems, needed for accessing everything from low end storage, to Windows and Mac servers, to high end NAS, continue to evolve. NFS and SMB, the two dominant network storage protocols, also continue to improve with exciting new features in their most recent dialects. And the Linux clients continue to improve their implementation of these protocols, recently adding security and performance enhancements for SMB3 and new pNFS layout types along with the NFSv4.2 support in the NFS client.

Panel Discussion of SMB3 POSIX Protocol Extensions

With the excellent clustering, reliability, performance and security features brought by SMB3, there has been considerable interest in improving its ability to better support POSIX clients such as Linux, Unix, and Mac. Earlier presentations discussed the details of the proposed extensions. This panel discussion will encourage feedback and information exchange on additional requirements for better practical POSIX compliance using extensions to the SMB3 protocol.
