SNIA Swordfish® Conformance Test Program: First 1.2.5a Product Passes Testing

SNIA Storage Management Initiative (SMI) is pleased to share that an Intel product has passed the SNIA Swordfish® 1.2.5a Conformance Test Program (CTP), making it the first passing implementation on the Swordfish CTP list.

The Swordfish specification helps to provide a unified approach for managing storage and servers in hyperscale and cloud infrastructure environments, making it easier for IT administrators to integrate scalable solutions into their data centers. The SMI Conformance Test Program allows manufacturers to test their products with a vendor-neutral, open-source test suite to validate conformance to Swordfish. Learn more about becoming a SMI member and Swordfish CTP by emailing snia-ctp-admin@snia.org.

SNIA STA Forum Chair Talks SAS with the European Press

Cameron T. Brett, SNIA STA Forum Chair, spoke at Technology Live! in London to a gathering of European press, analysts and influencers last month on “The Immortality of SAS: What’s Next for SAS Technology?” A3 Communications invited representatives from IDC, TechTarget, Neuralytix, Blocks & Files, Bloor and more for a lively discussion which spanned decades of technology standards development. Brett talked about the current SAS technology generation, products and use cases, and market data. Watch the video to be a fly on the wall in this discussion!
Upcoming Plugfests

Cloud Object Storage Plugfest

SNIA is planning an open collaborative Cloud Object Storage Plugfest co-located at SNIA Storage Developer Conference (SDC), September 16—18, 2024 to work on improving cross-implementation compatibility for client and/or server implementations of private and public cloud object storage solutions. This Plugfest aims to reduce compatibility issues, thus improving customer experience and increasing the adoption rate of object storage solutions.

Emerging Memories Branch Out
January 22, 2024
Tom Coughlin, Coughlin Associates; Jim Handy, Objective Analysis

Emerging memories are now found in multiple applications both as stand-alone chips and embedded into systems on chips (SoCs) as they replace established technologies, including SRAM, NOR flash, and DRAM. In this webinar, SNIA CMSI members and leading experts Tom Coughlin (Coughlin Associates/IEEE President) and Jim Handy (Objective Analysis) will discuss the latest developments in MRAM, ReRAM, FRAM, PCM, and other new memory technologies to explain why, how, and when these technologies will grow, and how their success will impact both the semiconductor and the capital equipment markets.

Accelerating Generative AI – Options for Conquering the Dataflow Bottlenecks
January 24, 2024
Mario Baldi, AMD; Rob Davis, NVIDIA; Dave Eggleston, Microchip; David McIntyre, Samsung; Bhavesh. Patel, Dell; Andres Rodriguez, Intel

Workloads using generative artificial intelligence trained on large language models are frequently throttled by insufficient resources (e.g., memory, storage, compute, or network dataflow bottlenecks). If not identified and addressed, these dataflow bottlenecks can constrain Gen AI application performance well below optimal levels.

Given the compelling uses across natural language processing (NLP), video analytics, document resource development, image processing, image generation, and text generation, being able to run these workloads efficiently has become critical to many IT and industry segments. The resources that contribute to generative AI performance and efficiency include CPUs, DPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, plus memory and storage controllers. Join this webinar to hear a panel of broad industry veterans discuss the topic of accelerating Gen AI.

How Are Technology Innovations within CXL and HBM Shaping the Future of Memory and Storage Use and Assembly?
January 30, 2024
Hosted by Memcon in partnership with SNIA
David McIntyre, Samsung; Jim Handy, Objective Analysis; Sony Varghese, Applied Materials

Industry experts from SNIA, Applied Research, Microsoft, and Objective Analysis will participate in a panel discussion to explore trends in memory and storage, CXLand high bandwidth memory (HBM) innovations, and how they will affect our future applications. This webinar will give you a preview into the topics and sessions at MemCon on March 26–27, 2024 where SNIA is an Association Partner.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Throughput, IOPs, and Latency, But Were Too Proud to Ask
February 7, 2024
Krishnakumar Gowravaram, Celestica; Bill Martin, Samsung; Erik Smith, Dell

Any discussion about storage systems is incomplete without the mention of Throughput, IOPs, and Latency. But what exactly do these terms mean and why are they important?

Collectively, these terms are often referred to as storage performance metrics. Performance can be defined as the effectiveness of a storage system to address I/O needs of an application or workload. Different application workloads have different I/O patterns, and with that arises different bottlenecks, so there is no “one-size fits all” in storage systems. These storage performance metrics help with storage solution design and selection based on application/workload demands.

Addressing the Hidden Costs of AI
February 27, 2024
Rob Davis, NVIDIA; David McIntyre, Samsung; Mishali Naik, Intel; Justin Potuznik, Dell; Erik Smith, Dell

The latest buzz around generative artificial intelligence ignores the massive costs to run and power the technology. Without any guard rails in place, what are the impacts of AI on sustainability and costs across our technology resources? This webinar will offer insights on the potentially hidden technical and infrastructure costs associated with generative AI, best practices, and potential solutions to be considered.
