New White Paper: Storage Device-Level Power Efficiency Measurement for
Cloud, Datacenter & Enterprise Storage

This new white paper describes storage device-level (individual storage device) power efficiency test methodology, the device test harness, the capture and use of IO workloads, calculating power efficiency metrics, and reporting device test results. The test methods are applicable to HDD and solid state storage devices (SDD) that have industry standard interconnects. This white paper lays a foundation for a forthcoming 2023 technical specification. This specification will be complementary to the system-level ISO/IEC 24091:2019 IT Specification for Data Center Storage (ISO 24091) Standard based on the SNIA Emerald™ Power Efficiency Measurement Specification V3.0/V4.0.

The SNIA Green Storage TWG is seeking participation in the further development of the device-level specification with the contribution of technical resources, short-term loan of in-production storage devices, and IO capture of real-world enterprise application workloads. SNIA Forms Blockchain Storage Committee

The SNIA Blockchain Storage Committee (BSC) was recently formed to address the needs of the technical community’s desire to engage in alliance-building and marketplace-driven activities, whereby all interested parties can participate without concern for Intellectual Property boundaries.

  • Creating SNIA alliance agreements for cross-industry collaboration

The technology world changes so quickly, how can you keep up with everything? SNIA has created a series of one-page definitions that can help. These vendor-neutral, clear, concise, and simple explanations have been created by SNIA experts. We now have 20 published “What Is pages that provide a description of a wide range of technologies, what they are, and how each one works.

Standards Work

TLS Specification for Storage Systems v2.1

SNIA continues to publish technical work at a rapid rate. The most recently published standard is the Transport Layer Security (TLS) Specification for Storage Systems v2.1. This specification details the requirements for use of the TLS protocol in conjunction with data storage technologies. Updates in v2.1 include: 
  • The required security strength increased from 112 bits to 128 bits
  • Increased emphasis on the use of TLS 1.3
  • Adjustments to the recommended TLS 1.2 cipher suites and TLS 1.3 extensions
  • Changed the minimum RSA key size for X.509 certificates from 2048 to 3072 bits; changed the minimum ECDSA signature certificate to NIST P-384 with SHA-384 or NIST P-521 with SHA-512
SNIA is updating ISO/IEC 20648 to match SNIA TLS spec v2.1.
