SNIA's Object Drive TWG Wins Best of Show at Flash Memory Summit
|
|
The SNIA Native NVMe-oF™ Drive specification, created by the Object Drive Technical Work Group, was honored at Flash Memory Summit 2020, winning the Most Innovative Flash Memory Technology Best of Show Award in the Industry Standards category. Category winners address innovations that will change the way flash memory is used in products and raise the bar to new levels of performance, availability, endurance, scalability and/or energy efficiencies. The Native NVMe-oF Drive standard defines Ethernet pins for use with existing SFF standardized connectors. The drives are expected to implement NVMe-oF over standard Ethernet networks. Congratulations to the volunteer members of the SNIA Object Drive Technical Work Group, authors of the winning specification!

Last month, Bill Martin, SNIA Technical Council Co-Chair, presented a detailed update on what’s happening in the development and deployment of the NVMe Key-Value standard. Bill explained where Key Value fits within an architecture, why it’s important, and the standards work that is being done between NVM Express® and SNIA. The webcast was one of our highest rated. If you missed it, it’s available on-demand along with the webcast slides. Attendees at the live event had many great questions, which Bill Martin has answered in this NVMe Key Value Standard Q&A blog.

Cloud Data Management & Interoperability: Why a CMDI Standard Matters
December 9, 2020
Mark Carlson, SNIA Technical Co-chair; Eric Hibbard, Chair SNIA Storage Security TWG; Alex McDonald, SNIA Cloud Storage Technologies Initiative Chair
The Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI™) International Standard is intended for application developers who are implementing cloud storage systems, and who are developing applications to manage and consume cloud storage. It documents how to access cloud storage namespaces and how to manage the data stored in these namespaces. In this webcast we’ll provide an overview of the CDMI standard and cover CDMI 2.0:
- Support for encrypted objects
- Delegated access control
- General clarifications
- Errata contributed by vendors implementing the CDMI standard
- Real-world healthcare use case
Digital Storage Stars in the Media and Entertainment Industry
January 13, 2021
Tom Coughlin, President, Coughlin Associates & SNIA Compute, Memory, and Storage Initiative (CMSI) Education Chair
Digital storage is a critical technology for professional Media and Entertainment (M&E). With the COVID-19 pandemic much M&E work went remote, enabled by cloud-based services and private and public cloud storage. NVMe® SSDs and emerging memories are assuming increased use in high resolution, high frame rate, high dynamic range video content workflows. Between 2019 and 2025, about a 3X increase is expected in the required storage capacity in the industry and a 3.4X increase in storage capacity shipped per year. Cloud storage capacity for the M&E industry will increase 13X between 2019 and 2025.
This webinar looks at the trends driving demand for digital storage in all parts of the M&E industry, with data from the 2020 Digital Storage in Media and Entertainment report from Coughlin Associates.
Data Privacy and Data Protection in the COVID Era
January 20, 2021
Glyn Bowden, HPE; Eric Hibbard, SNIA Storage Security TWG Chair; Alex McDonald, SNIA Cloud Storage Technologies Initiative Chair
The COVID-19 Pandemic has amplified cybersecurity concerns particularly related to the cloud. Threat actors have recognized a unique opportunity to exploit pandemic-related vulnerabilities through social engineering attacks, business email compromise, work from home or other remote weak points. This results in increased risk and occurrence of ransomware attacks and data breaches that can disrupt or totally compromise organizations’ ability to conduct business. These security incidents can also subject victims to liability for violations of privacy and data breach notification laws. Join this webcast as SNIA experts will discuss:
- Changing threat landscape due to COVID
- Recent attacker exploits
- Common security failures and their consequences
- Strategies to combat malware
- Minimizing ransomware risks
- How emerging technologies (5G, IoT, AI, etc.) expand the threat landscape
