Abstract

When it comes to cloud-native and container-ready storage, most industry discussions focus on how to make existing storage systems work with Docker. But Docker containers themselves can enable more elegant solutions. In Project Longhorn, an open source microservices-based block storage solution, containers are an integral part of the system, enabling lower complexity (with just 20,000 lines of Go), and better availability.

In this presentation, Sheng Yang, a software engineer at Rancher Labs, will contrast the traditional approaches and architecture for distributed storage systems with the approach taken with Project Longhorn. He will explain the architecture of Longhorn, the challenges during the development, and pros and cons compare to the traditional way.
