Abstract

Software is rapidly changing the way storage is deployed and used. Cloud and hyperscale based applications are driving this new paradigm of storage use cases. Furthermore, the cloud will consume the majority of exabytes built for the foreseeable future. Solid-state storage has much to offer by further enabling an application to define its performance, but additional value can be derived from solid-state storage simply by how applications are designed to use it.

Toshiba Memory is investing in various ways for software to enable flash to provide superior performance, behavior and TCO. For example, popular applications can be architected in a way gain greater value from SSDs by extending their endurance and improving their health. To demonstrate this, Toshiba Memory has re-architected the RocksDB engine in a new way that considers flash peculiarities and solves the SSD health and endurance challenge. Innovation will continue to redefine the use of storage and this will accelerate the use of solid state memories like NAND flash for significant benefits in system performance and TCO.
