Ethernet Storage Forum (ESF) Webcast Series
The ESF has launched a 3–part Webcast series based on a new white paper, “10GbE — Coming of Age.” Their first Webcast: 10GbE — Key Trends, Drivers and Predictions discussed the technical and economic justifications that will likely make 2012 the “breakout year” for 10GbE.
Learn the many new features of NFSv4.1 and hear how careful planning can result in a migration that does not require modification to applications, and that utilizes existing operational infrastructure in its deployment. Discover why users should be evaluating and using NFSv4.1 in 2012.
The availability of solid state devices based on NAND flash technology is dramatically changing the performance and efficiency dynamics of storage systems. Join this Webcast as experts discuss implementation options based on specific workload requirements and how the use of Flash-based storage applications increases the need for 10GbE.
Two New Technical Work Groups: Non-Volatile Memory and Linear Tape File System
Two new SNIA Technical Work Groups have recently been created. The first is the Non–Volatile Memory (NVM) Programming Technical Work Group (TWG) created to accelerate the availability of software–enabling NVM hardware. The TWG, initially consisting of Dell, EMC, Fujitsu, HP, IBM, Intel, NetApp, Oracle, QLogic and Symantec will create specifications that will provide guidance to operating system, device driver, and application developers. The work group aims to serve as an industry forum communicating the need for Operating System (OS) enhancements to support NVM hardware. Click here for more information.
The second is the Linear Tape File System (LTFS) TWG. This TWG will broaden the industry collaboration and adoption of the LTFS Format Specification v 2.1 as well as develop future versions of the specification. SNIA will partner with INCITS to advance the specification through the national and international standards accreditation process. For more information on TWGS, visit https://www.snia.org/tech_activities/work/twgs.
CompTIA Storage+ Powered by SNIA Certification Online Courses Now Available
SNIA has updated the curriculum of our Foundations Certification e–course to the new CompTIA Storage+ Powered by SNIA Certification e–course. It is available online or for download so you can train at your own pace and refer back to it at any time.
The e–course is designed to provide the student with an overall knowledge and technical skills to work as a team member to implement storage network solutions. This involves understanding of storage networking concepts, ability to explain and recognize key storage networking components and technologies, familiarity with cross–industry, standard configuration tools, ability to do simple storage network backups, recoveries and business continuance.
Cloud Data Management Interface Specification Update
The June CDMI plugfest featured the first-ever “follow–the–sun” international participation. The multi–day session featured critical mass and participation from contributors in China, Amsterdam and in various locations in the US. It also had collaboration between the CDMI implementers and constituents from the OCCI working group. The next session will run in conjunction with the SNIA Storage Developer’s Conference in Santa Clara in September. Click here for details.
A CDMI specification implementation based on OpenStack Swift has been published at https://github.com/osaddon/cdmi. This implementation supports basic CDMI cloud data and container manipulation and provides over 70 functional tests based on CDMI specification. Click here for details. We encourage interested developers or enthusiasts to check out the code samples posted in the Open Stack online repository here: http://github.com/osaddon/cdmi.
New Member Added to SNIA Board of Directors
SNIA recently appointed Jim Pappas, Director of Technology Initiatives, Data Center Group, Intel Corporation to its Board of directors. He joins 11 other distinguished members of the Board of Directors that are charged with oversight of the Association’s vision and mission as well as ensuring that tangible value accrues to member companies.
